THE WATER THAT YOU
SEE is part of Florida Bay, the inland body of water bordered by the
Everglades on the North and the Florida Keys to the South. The main channel,
marked with red and green markers, a few hundreds yards off shore, is the Intracoastal Waterway, which
runs from Key West to Maine. We recognize
the Intracoastal Waterway for two
reasons. It is the main, controlled-depth
channel running along the bay side of the
Keys and it serves as a boundary for the
Everglades National Park. North and West
of the Intracoastal waterway is the vast
expanse of the flats and mangrove islands
that are intertwined with countless channels
that may or may not be marked by the
National Park Service. Remember that this
is a national park, which means that many
species of plant and animal life are being
preserved in this park for future generations
to enjoy. There is fantastic fishing for
species such as Redfish, Tarpon, Snook,
Cobia, Trout and Permit to name a few, but
you need to review the regulations set by
the park service before partaking of this
wondrous resource. There also are a myriad
of birds available for watching including
Eagles, Ospreys, Roseate Spoonbills, Pelicans,
and countless others. It is about a 20
mile run across Florida Bay to Flamingo, an
outpost of the Everglades National Park
with docking facilities and other amenities.
